The Series
Ascensión is a seven-canvas series that traces the soul’s passage from death through ascending realms of consciousness to a final state of luminous transcendence.
Each piece is both a stage and a state of being: the violent extraction of the spirit from darkness, its turbulent navigation through liminal space, the breakthrough into colour and paradise, and finally — heaven not as bright void but as darkness made conscious, star-filled, complete.

Narrative Arc
From death to the luminous
Death — The Threshold
Darkness, dissolution, the body becoming porous. The “I” unravelling. Not horror, but surrender. The moment of letting go.
The Liminal / Shadow Realm
Grey tones, mist, half-formed figures. The bardo, the in-between, where identity is fluid. Not yet transformed, no longer what was.
The Breakthrough / Paradise
Colour emerging, weightlessness, impossible architecture. Where thought becomes form. The spirit is now in colour, surrounded by it.
Heaven / The Luminous
Full spectrum light, presence without boundary. Not bright void but darkness made radiant. The spirit doesn’t arrive in a place — it becomes the condition of seeing itself.

The Artist
What ascends is the same thing that was seized.
Lutz Karpf is a Miami-based artist working in mixed media on canvas. Formerly a celebrated hair and makeup artist, Karpf redirected his creative practice entirely toward painting following a profound health journey — a transformation that became the seed of his current work.
The series draws on Karpf’s own experience of bodily transformation and survival, reframed as universal myth. The radiating line-structures that appear across every canvas serve as the thread of consciousness persisting through every dissolution — proof that what ascends is the same thing that was seized.
